Multiple reasons.
One of them is a change in the definition of the disease. In the past, only kids with Autism that were profoundly affected, nonverbal, or otherwise severely handicapped would get the diagnosis. Now we recognize a spectrum of disorder, such that mild cases (that in the past would not have been diagnosed) now are diagnosed. My oldest child fits in this category. In the past he would have been the “quirky” kid, today he is recognized for what he is.
Also, there is far more research going on. For example, in Utah, there is an ongoing study to evaluate everyone in the state with autism. It’s a big study, and has been heavily publicized in the community. Therefore, the pediatricians in the state are on the lookout for cases. You tend to find what you look for.
Both of these increase the apparent numbers of autistic kids, with no change in the reality of how many kids are affected. There may also be a true increase in cases, but as no one has yet defined the underlying mechanism of autism, it’s tough to say what might be causing it.

I do not know what is causing autism Doc, and I am neutral on vax, except having 7 kids and 24 grandkids, I have seen too many idiot doctors try to vaccinate virtual newborns, and earlier than six months (actually a year+) is just insane.
Your numbers game is a factor, but so is CO2 in warming… but it is overrated, and not at all objective, much less substantiated.
Moreover, I am 62. My generation was – for all its faults – utterly brilliant. Like Slick Willie though, we squandered our talents and gifts, and blessings paid for by the Greatest Generation. That notwithstanding, a vast majority of Americans are not educated by our standards back then; worse, and the crux of the matter: they cannot process thought.
I must disagree, those quirky ‘characters’ we knew back then; those Rockwellians, were not ‘really autistic but we didn’t have a name for it’. Not so. Unless one broadens the definition to a field so broad so as to “classify” virtually everybody “autistic”. (You know Marxist classification of mental illness is a major tool of control). Sounds alot like passing more laws to make more criminals.
Or alternatively, something is actually slowing brain function of broad swaths of the population. This one gets my vote. The question is, what? Maybe it is vax too early, or GMOs, pesticides, ingredients we call food, but which are not really food. Who knows? But something is vastly, undeniably different.
I myself notice how much smarter the animals are becoming.

I live a few miles away from a city with the lowest imunization rates in the country. We see many deaths each year in our area due to this problem. We suffer frequent outbreaks. Our lives and our kids lives are put at risk seasonaly.
(Sorry in advance If I sound a bit troll like on this one)
1. Vaccines do not cause autism but do save lives and prevent alot of morbidity with few adverse effects relative to the tremendous gains. Enough precious research funds have been diverted from real lifesaving reasearch to prove no corolation to autism over and over again. This is painfully clear to any objective scientifically literate individual.
2. Wakefield, Mercolla, natural news etc.. are well documented frauds.
3. Vaccinate your kids, or if you are too much of a cool rebel, who knows better (just like everyone else), who is smarter than the medical comunity please quit killing kids with your pertussis and stay away from the densely packed highly mobile comunity at large.
4. Want a different opinion? Spend a few years of your life in school learning the basics of the science on this, learn how to study the research, face disease on a daily basis, travel to areas of the world without vaccines and see what happens there, spend time in a polio treatment facility rehabing those injured by Polio. Comfort the newly weds whos family name dies with them because they cant have kids due to measles induced sterility.
Then form your educated opinion.

Hi Doc,
People like simple explanations but the human body is complex. The likeliest explanation to increased autism specifically in the US population (and I believe the numbers have increased, not just because we are ‘looking’ for them) is a wide of variety environmental toxins that can express certain genetic predispositions. Sort of like two inert substances that form a binary explosive.
The reason parents of autistic children (I have two in my family) keep suspecting vaccines is that many times the symptoms show up immediately post vaccination. Now the science of vaccination is sound but the other ingredients in the vaccines, many times considered toxic on their own, can possibly act as a so called ‘final straw’ that pushes an infant exposed to environmental toxins, combined with genetic predisposition, into autism.
So while its ridicules to say vaccines cause autism per se; its not unrealistic that they have negative, possibly life altering effects in a segment of the population.
